A WEDNESDAY DISPATCH FROM YSABEL

What if the life you're living… isn't really yours?
They say: “Follow the rules. Fit in. Wait your turn.”
We say: "Break free. Write your own. Move on your timing."
Most of life is following rules someone else wrote. Society, the system, even your family—they've all tried to hand you a playbook.
You weren't born to follow someone else's script. You were born to create your own.
Take a breath. Close your eyes for a moment and think:
Where in my life have I been following someone else's script?
Notice any feelings that arise. Judgment? Excitement? Anxiety? Curiosity?
Think Back
Think back to a time when you questioned your path. Maybe it was a job you outgrew, a relationship that no longer fit, or a decision you made that felt risky, unconventional, or downright scary.
That moment? That was you listening to your inner voice instead of the world's rules. That was the Global Dream Team spirit in action.
We live in a noisy world—feeds overflowing, trends changing, lives of others constantly in view. It's easy to get caught up chasing what seems appealing in the moment. But in all this noise, something essential can get lost: your inner voice. The whisper of who you truly are and what you want.
Following someone else's path can feel safe and even rewarding. But here's what it actually costs you:
Dissatisfaction, even after achieving impressive milestones
Lack of motivation when your work doesn't align with your core values
Burnout from forcing yourself into someone else's mold
Unfulfilling success—followers, money, recognition—but still empty
Lost time chasing a dream that wasn't truly yours
My Journey
I know this personally. And honestly? Creating and building things has always been part of who I am—even as a little girl running my own 'Heavenly Cafe' for my sisters or launching my first YouTube channel. But somewhere along the way, I convinced myself that stacking impressive internships at top companies like Warner Bros, Fox, and CAA, and working at startups behind the scenes, was safer and more 'legitimate' than fully starting my own thing. I’m truly grateful for every experience—but eventually, I had to do what I’d wanted to do all along: start my own thing.
After graduating from UCLA in 2019, I had a choice: join a major corporate company like Disney, or take a chance on a startup as the #1 employee. True to my risk-taking nature, I chose the startup.

That first year taught me so much about building a business from the ground up—we were even featured in Forbes, TechCrunch, and Oprah. The experience was invaluable, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. But over time, I felt deeply misaligned. I had joined to make an impact and contribute meaningfully, yet it became clear that for some, it was more about the money than the mission. That wasn’t my path. I came for impact. I came to make a difference.
I'd bond with friends over jobs we disliked—stuck in a constant loop of complaining that made me question if this was really what adult life was meant to be. I convinced myself to stay longer than I should because leaving felt scary. But deep down, I knew something had to change.
Then COVID hit, giving me space to reflect. I asked myself what I actually wanted to build—and what kind of life would feel meaningful. I realized I wanted to empower others to build lives aligned with their own truth—not society's script. To show people they could pursue what truly lights them up, not what they're told they should want. That they didn't have to stay in jobs that made them unhappy just because it seemed like the 'right' path.
So I wrote down my dream life. Thirty pages of what I wanted—not what anyone else said I should want. And then I left to create it.

I started my YouTube channel and set off to travel the world, capturing the stories of people who were deeply passionate about their lives and work. Those conversations and connections changed everything. They showed me what's possible when you follow your heart and commit to building a life that feels truly fulfilling.
Since then, I've traveled to 40 countries with a camera in hand, meeting incredible people and experiencing transformational journeys.
One moment stands out: I was seven weeks into a solo trip through Asia when I found myself in Hanoi, Vietnam. That day, I explored the city—wandering through the Temple of Literature, visiting the Ho Chi Minh Museum—but something felt off. By evening, I was sitting alone in a boba shop, drenched from a sudden downpour, staring at the rain. And then it hit me: I was homesick. Not for a place, but for deep human connection. For community. For the people who truly understood me—the intricacies of who I am, my quirks, my whole self.

That night, back in my hotel room, I cried in a way I hadn't allowed myself to before. It was uncomfortable. It was vulnerable. But in that moment, I realized what I'd been missing: deeper human connection. Travel had given me freedom and adventure, but it also revealed that true happiness, for me, wasn't just about seeing new places—it was rooted in authentic connection.
Fast forward to August 2024. I took a six-week trip to the Nordics, and this time, I traveled differently. I prioritized connection—hosting a road trip through Norway with newfound friends, organizing dinner parties, meeting locals to hear their stories. On that Norway road trip, one person—seeing the vast natural beauty for the first time—held back tears of gratitude. Moments like that reminded me why I do this work.

Travel helped me uncover who I truly am, what I deeply value, and what I'm meant to bring to the world. Connection, creativity, authenticity, and exploration were always there—but these experiences showed me that honoring them is non-negotiable.
For you, it might be something completely different. Travel might reveal a passion for art, a desire to help others, or a pull toward building something meaningful in your own community. Whatever it is, the journey is about uncovering what feels authentic to you.
What This Isn't
Breaking the playbook isn't recklessness. It isn't quitting everything tomorrow.
It's intentionality.
It's asking: "Is this mine, or what I've been told to want?"
It's courage. Not the loud, dramatic kind—the quiet kind. The kind that says: I'm going to honor what I actually need, even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else.
Reflection
✦ Three prompts to guide you:
1. Name one decision in the last year that felt like someone else's choice, not yours.
2. What would your life look like if you started writing your own script today?
3. What's one small, concrete step you could take this week toward that life?
Don't overthink it. Just write.
